Officers save choking baby's life

Sarasota, FL -

A one-year-old Sarasota baby named Rylen Gibbs got to celebrate his birthday today, in part because of two officers who saved his life.

Officers Dominic Harris and Steven Fergus were patrolling 21st Street back on June 18th when they heard screams and noticed a disturbance.

"We observed some females, a crowd of them and they were holding a baby, like upside down. Immediately, I jumped out the vehicle," said Officer Harris.

Rylen was choking after a neighbor gave him a piece of chicken and a bone had gotten lodged in the young boy's throat.

Both officers were quick to take action. Officer Fergus called dispatch while Officer Harris performed the Heimlich maneuver, and dislodged the bone.

Rylen began breathing again, but his throat was swollen and he was still having trouble. They took him to the hospital, and rushed him into surgery. He's now had several surgeries, and doctors at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg are hopeful that he will make a full recovery.

"I'm thankful for everyone that rolled up and the officers who arrived. If they hadn't, I don't know how long we would have been out there trying to bring him back," said Rylen's mother, Latesha Gibbs.

Gibbs tells FOX 13 that she forgives the neighbor who gave her little boy the chicken bone and now prays that her son can come home soon.

"I know she didn't mean any harm, so I forgave her the same day," Gibbs said.

Forgiveness and faith, the bottom line for everybody involved.

"I would ask everybody to throw up some prayers for a speedy recovery for him and pray from the mom," said Officer Harris.
