Fireworks Sword Recalled Due To Explosion, Burn Hazard

On the eve of Independence Day, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling a handheld fireworks fountain device in the shape of a mock sword.

The product by the company Big Sword is intended to emit sparks from the tip of the sword.

However, according to the CPSC, the mock sword "can unexpectedly explode, posing a risk of impact and burn to the user."

The firm has received two reports of the fountain exploding while in use. No injuries have been reported.

Involved in Thursday's recall are about 1,040 swords, which were manufactured in China and sold at Big Fireworks retailers and wholesale distributors in the U.S. from April to June for about $13.

The 30-inch-long, blue and yellow swords have the Big Fireworks logo, the words "Big Sword" printed on the front, and a yellow cardboard tag attached to the handle with a caution statement printed on it. The model number 3609 is printed above the barcode.

The CPSC says consumers should immediately stop using the recalled fireworks devices and return them to the place of purchase to receive a full refund. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
