Philadelphia Firefighter Saves Injured Pit Bull

Mount Airy - A Philadelphia firefighter and his fiancée are being credited with saving the life of an injured dog.

Fox 29’s Bruce Gordon has the life-saving story.

Philadelphia Firefighter Ryan Craig and his fiancée Emily have a brand new foster pup.

A 3-year-old Pit Bull named Guenevere, who without Ryan, would be dead right now.

"We kind of pride ourselves in the department, on being a pro-active member of the community and taking care of the community. And not everybody in the community walks on two legs, you know?" said Ryan.

On Monday, Guenevere hobbled into Ryan’s firehouse, Engine 9 Ladder 21 located on Germantown Ave in Mount Airy.

The dog was horribly maimed around the neck and ran right into the captain's office.

She needed help and seemed to know where to find it.

The firefighters did what they had to do and called Animal Control. The officers took the dying dog to a shelter.

In her condition, Guenevere had 48 hours to be adopted or be put down.

"I was just thinking, there's got to be something that I can do for this animal,” said Ryan.

So Ryan turned to the website GoFundMe to plead for donations to get Guenevere the medical help she so desperately needed.

In less than a day, he raised more than $2,000.

"I'm literally humbled and awed by the power of social media. The fact that you can reach out and touch so many people,” said Ryan.

Ryan next turned to the Rockledge Veterinary Clinic, where the wife of a fellow firefighter offered deeply discounted help and a horrifying diagnosis.

"I think she was hung, numerous times, and I think she was. They allowed other dogs to attack he like a Pit Bull bait dog,” said Dr. Carrie Hutchinson.

Dr. Hutchinson had Guenevere on the operating table for more than three hours.

"She was totally put under and we had to clip and clean all the wounds. And clean all the maggots out and flush out the wounds, and tied up the wounds as best we could,” said Dr. Hutchinson.

Ryan had to convince Emily to take in the mangled Pit Bull.

It was an easy sell.

"He was doing a good thing, and I couldn't say 'no' to an animal in need," said Emily. "I haven't stopped crying since I heard. The fact that anyone would harm an animal is just far beyond me."

Guenevere remains on antibiotics and pain medicine, but her prognosis is good for a full recovery. Thanks to the firefighter.
