New Cigarette Tax To Help Close Philly Schools' Budget Gap

Posted: Updated:

Late Wednesday night, state lawmakers closed a much-needed financial gap for the Philadelphia School District.

The house passed legislation that gives city council the authority to enact a $2-per-pack cigarette tax.

It will generate an additional $90 million dollars in funding for the school district.

Without the bill, the district would've been forced to lay off some 1,300 educators and delay the opening of schools in the fall.

FOX 29's Jenni Joyce has more details in this live report from school district headquarters.
