The City of Mesa will be raising money to help honor the memory of a police officer killed in a wrong-way crash.

Money raised at the fundraiser will go to make improvements at a baseball field named after Sgt. Brandon Mendoza.

There will be a big 4th of July celebration in Mesa where they plan to shut down Center Street. There will be music, fireworks, and a raffle for the first time.

Hundreds of people are expected, and it's where you can honor Sgt. Brandon Mendoza by buying a raffle ticket. The money will be used to make improvements at Guerrero Park that Mendoza helped rebuild.

"We want to do a lot of enhancement to that park, it needs a lot of work, and we want to make improvements in honor of all the work he did," said Steven Wright.

Steven Wright came up with the idea of a raffle to raise money.

"Brandon was instrumental in taking that park back for the community, one of the things he did was build a baseball field," said Wright.

Wright has knocked on a lot of doors telling people about the raffle and the plan to make it better for the neighborhood. He says businesses have been generous.

"We have a big screen TV; we have a $1,000 stereo system; many businesses helped provide these gifts," he said.

People are already buying tickets; it's $5 per ticket or 5 tickets for $25. Wright says Mendoza would be happy about the idea.

"For Sgt. Mendoza was all about the community, I think he would be elated to know that we're doing this in his honor," said Wright.

Leaving a lasting legacy for Sgt. Brandon Mendoza.
