Albertville man shoots black bear in backyard to protect daughter

Posted: Updated:
ALBERTVILLE, Minn. (KMSP) -

An Albertville, Minn., father needed just one gunshot to kill a black bear he felt was a danger to his daughter, who was playing in the family’s backyard early Tuesday evening.

According to the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, the bear was first reported on the 10000 block of 64th St NE at approximately 7:45 p.m., when it walked up to the sliding glass door of a home. A responding deputy spotted the bear a short distance away, near a home on the 10000 block of Karston Ave NE. Shortly after arriving, the deputy heard a single gunshot and saw the bear running toward the woods behind the house. The bear then collapsed to the ground and died.

The man who shot the bear called the Wright County Sheriff’s Office immediately after and said his daughter was playing in the backyard when the bear emerged from the woods. Fearing for his family’s safety, the man grabbed his hunting rifle and shot the bear.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Wright County authorities are not investigating the incident, as they felt no further action is needed. Both agencies confirmed that anyone who feels their life is threatened by a bear is allowed to shoot one, even off season. In fact, the DNR says a person would be considered justified in shooting any bear that was destroying property or posing a public safety threat.

Yet, Capt. Greg Salo points out that most bears are not a threat a people. Given time, they'll usually just leave.

"Enjoy it," he recommended. 'Enjoy it for what it's worth. If you have a bear in your yard, you are pretty lucky."

Yet, many in the Albertville community admit they'll be sleeping more soundly knowing that the bear is no longer around. According the DNR, the best way to keep bears away is to remove all food sources -- including bird feeders -- and keep garbage cans indoors at night.
