ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Abortions in Minnesota hit a record low last year according to the Minnesota Department of Health, dropping 7 percent and falling below 10,000 for the first time since 1975.

According to data released by the state department on Tuesday, that number is 33 percent lower than in 2011 and the annual number of abortions has fallen 11 of the past 12 years. Planned Parenthood performed 4,370 of the 9,903 procedures last year, the highest of any provider.

In total, 5,285 of women receiving an abortion were 20-29 years of age. Younger women have seen a decline -- 1,047 were under 19 years of age -- 58 percent fewer than in 2001. About one-third of women who had an abortion in 2013 said they were using some form of birth control when they got pregnant, however birth control pills, IUDs and marking fertility cycles on a calendar are all considered forms of birth control, among others.
