Report: NYC public school class size rising

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - A new report has found that New York City's public school classrooms are getting more crowded.

The report by the city's budget oversight agency also found that the number of students in "temporary housing situations," including homeless shelters, has risen during the 2012-2013 school year.

The Independent Budget Office report was issued on Tuesday.

The average class size, particularly in the lower grades, has shot up. On average there were 25.5 students in elementary and middle school classrooms, up from 24.6 two years earlier.

Leonie Haimson, the executive director of Class Size Matters, tells The New York Times that class size is rising for several reasons, including putting more than one school in the same building known as co-location.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
