Minnesota United unveils new mascot amid World Cup game

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Worker productivity may have taken a hit when Team USA took on Belgium in the World Cup on Tuesday, but those who played hooky to catch the game got another sort of show in downtown Minneapolis.

At lunch hour along Nicollet Avenue, there was a noisy costumed affair celebrating the spirit of soccer. Minnesota United launched the team's new loon mascot, which will be named later via contest, on Tuesday afternoon -- and it was in good company. Minnesota's other mascots made a flag-draped jaunt through downtown, riding the World Cup wave to take advantage of some free marketing for Minnesota United.

"Today, with the US game at 3, seemed like a really good day to launch a mascot," Vice President Andrea Yoch said.

The World Cup is making Facebook history. So far, the tournament has triggered a billion interactions on the social media site, and Facebook says that's unprecedented even for a huge sporting event.

Although Team USA fell 2-1 in overtime on Tuesday, there are still two weeks of games left to go -- and Minnesota's professional soccer team has had its own schedule disrupted by the hubbub so that the players can catch all the action.

"They've been rearranging their practices to catch all the games," Yoch explained. "We have a lot of international players, so we're making sure the Columbians can watch, the Mexicans can watch. We have a bunch of Brazilians."
