PHOENIX (KSAZ) - There is new information about a wrong-way crash that killed Mesa Police Sergeant Brandon Mendoza.

According to the report the driver who hit Sgt. Mendoza was very drunk and under the influence of drugs.

He drove the wrong way for 31 miles before the crash, speeding most of that time.

Think about that, speeding on the wrong side of the freeway for over 30 miles.

The first call to 911 reported the wrong-way driver at Loop 101 and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard. From there Raul Silva drove the wrong-way along the 101, south on the 51, and then east on I-10. He then crashed head-on into Sgt. Mendoza on the US60 to I-10 ramp.

The report says that Silva's average speed during that time was between 75-80 miles per hour.

When officers arrived on the scene Silva's SUV was on it's side and on fire. They tried to rescue him but the flames were too intense.

Investigators in the report say Silva had been fighting with his wife the day of the crash and started drinking around Noon.

Tests run by the DPS crime lab show his blood alcohol content level was .238 at the time of the crash, nearly 3 times the legal limit. The test also showed he was under the influence of methamphetamines. He also was driving without a license.

The crash was one of three deadly wrong-way crashes that happened in one week. ADOT is now making some changes on our highways trying to prevent more wrong-way accidents.
