Summer coding camp for NYC teens

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Building websites and developing mobile applications all starts with writing code. To many of us, it's a foreign language. Children, some as young as 14, are learning it all at the New York Code and Design Academy in the Financial District.

Oumou Kanoute is attending a 4-week coding camp and wants to encourage other girls to break into the tech field.

"My main goal is to grasp as much info as I can and start a club at my school for incoming freshmen and encourage girls to get involved," she says.

Jeremy Snepar, CEO and co-founder of the academy, is on a mission to teach everyone how to code. Snepar worked as an investment banker advising media companies and discovered a need to train people in tech skills.

"We teach them everything from html to the basic languages for building a website," he says.

Successful graduates have gone onto make their own websites in fashion design and food tracking. The academy also offers a full-time web development course.

Many students are beginners like Patricia O'Connor. The former lawyer put herself up to the coding challenge. She admits it was intimidating at first.

"Little by little and you see results and you get the rewards back right away," she says. "Anyone out there, I don't care how old or young you are, you can do this. That's the truth."

Class costs range from $2,000 to $10,000 and can run for 4 to 12 weeks.

Starting this fall, the academy will have weekend classes for children at the age of 9 to exposing even younger kids to the ever changing world of code and technology.
