Teen Drowns Swimming With Friends In The Tacony Creek

JUNIATA PARK -

Philadelphia Police say a 15-year-old looking to cool off on a hot day drowned in a local creek on Monday.

"You look down there and you can see the rocks. I tell the kids yal just be careful," said Carl Smith.

Smith came out his front door to hear what he says he always feared about the Tacony Creek near his Juniata home. Emergency crews rushed to a call of a teen who went under water but never came back up.

"That's sad. I can't believe it. It really has me messed up," said Smith.

Philadelphia Police, Fire and Paramedics rushed to the creek on Fischer Lane near Ramona Street just before 6 p.m. on Monday evening. They say four teenage boys had been swimming in the creek under the bridge when one of them, a 15-year old drowned. The murky water made it difficult to find him.

"There wasn't much of a current. We couldn't see the bottom. We had to feel along the bottom until we eventually located him further down. We could see the feet but that was it," said Firefighter John Faulls.

When search crews pulled the boys body from the water, they say, he was unconscious.

"He was put in the back of a rescue squad. Medics worked on him for a long time but tragically he was pronounced dead at 6:13 pm," said Chief Inspector Scott Small with Philadelphia Police. Investigators say the area where it happened the water is 8 to 10 feet deep with a lot of debris and it's hard to tell where the bottom drops lower.

Still they say every year, kids take the risk.

"It's a shame. I mean I know this has probably happened a few times here. I grew up about two blocks away. This was actually notorious back here for a bad spot to swim," said Firefighter Faulls.

Police interviewed the victim's friends at Northeast Detectives, but say this appears to just be a tragic accident.  Police say the boys told them the victim could not swim. Police also say swimming in area creeks its illegal. You could be issued a ticket.
