Carjacker Returns Van After Finding Child Inside

Posted: Updated:

SALT LAKE CITY, UT- A woman allegedly steals a van in Salt Lake City, but returns it after she realizes there is a child inside.

According to police, a mother left her van running Sunday morning while she went to check that her house was locked, and her three-year-old daughter was inside the vehicle.

A woman allegedly jumped in and drove off.

Officials say the suspect, 22-year-old Idaly Proano, was not aware there was a child in the back until she was a few miles away.

That's when she turned around and drove back to the van owner's house and knocked on the door, returning the little girl.

Proano then asked if she could come inside and wait for police, so she could turn herself in.

The little girl was not harmed and her father is thankful his daughter is all right.

"We appreciate the fact that she felt remorse for what she had done I don't know if she just decided it wasn't worth, maybe she saw so many cops in the area looking, the mother lost sight of the van so we are glad she decided to turn back around," said Salt Lake City Police Lt. Scott White.

Proano is facing charges for stealing property and possession of drugs.
