Colorado Fire Survivor Says "I Do"

Posted: Updated:

Centennial, CO- A Colorado woman walked down the aisle on Saturday after escaping a fire earlier in the week.

On Monday, a fire broke out in Lenise Ruff's apartment complex, which destroyed all of her belongings, just days before her wedding.

Her roommate who was also supposed to be her maid of honor broke her back trying to escape the flames and wasn't sure if she'd make it to the ceremony.

However, the bride looked on the bright side.

They say no wedding is ever perfect, but Lenise's wedding was. Even though she didn't have the right shoes, and some of her bridesmaids had to back out last minute.

"Last night, I called one of my friends and I was like do you want to be in my wedding," said Lenise.

Normally, those are things that would ruin the good mood, but not for her.

"It kind of felt like a bad dream, but to finally get to this day and get to marry the man of my dreams. I couldn't ask for a better day,” she said.

As Lensie was getting ready for her big day she thought about her best friend, Marilyn.

"It’s tough yeah, getting ready without her, but I know she needs to take care of herself and focus on herself today,” Lenise said.

Lenise suffered second degree burns from the fire.

"My eyelashes got a little bit singed and my ears did and my face got really burnt,” said Lensie.

Still, in spite of it all, nothing brought the bride down.

"All the skin peeled off about Wednesday and Thursday, so it’s kind of like a facial. A fire facial," she said.

She says she now realizes it’s not the little things that count; it's the big ones.

"You don't want to take anything for granted ever. I`ve really realized how blessed and fortunate we are that we made it out alive,” said Ruff.

And as strong as Lenise is her best friend Marilyn is just as strong.

At the last minute, she did something no one thought was possible.

"She`s the closest thing I have to a sister and I’m just so proud of her," said Lenise..

"We`ve been through quite a whirlwind of crazy events, but we are standing today and Marilyn is standing and she`s walking and we are so happy,” said Lenise.
