St. Paul waives impound fees for cars moved by flood threat

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

St. Paul police are waiving impound fees for the time period between June 24-26. The threat of flooding along the Mississippi River forced the city to move the impound lot to the north end of the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.

The fairgrounds impound lot is open 7 days a week, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Vehicle owners should enter on Hoyt Avenue from Snelling Avenue. The impound lot phone number will remain the same, 651-266-5642.

In addition to displacing 400 vehicles from the impound lot, flooding and the threat of flooding in St. Paul forced the Taste of Minnesota to relocate to Waconia. Several weddings planned on Harriet Island have also been forced to find new locations.

With water moving at 114,000 cubic feet per second, the chief river of the largest drainage system in North America is now moving faster than Niagara Falls, and city leaders warn spectators to stay away from the water because it is more dangerous than it looks on the surface.
