QUICK READ: 9 quotes from President Obama's Lake Harriet speech

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

President Obama’s second day in Minneapolis brought roughly 2,000 people to the Lake Harriet Bandshell for the president’s pitch on policies to boost the American economy. Thursday, Obama was greeted by an enthusiastic group of supporters at a town hall-style event at Minnehaha Park. The president reassured Minnesotans that they have a “strong partner” in flood relief before opening the town hall up for questions on everything from equal pay to climate change.

Friday's speech at Lake Harriet echoed many of the themes discussed at Minnehaha Park -- optimism over cynicism, how the president relates to middle class Americans, and how many of Minnesota's policies mirror his vision for the nation.

What President Obama said at Lake Harriet

OBAMACARE: “Now in Minnesota you can say the women are strong, the men are good-looking, the children are above average and 95 percent of you are insured.”

ECONOMY: “By every economic measure, we are better off now than when I took office. You wouldn’t know it, but we are. We’ve made some enormous strides. But that’s not the end of the story. We have more work to do.”

DAY WITH REBEKAH: “I really like her, and her husband is like the husband of the year. Generally you don’t want your wife to meet Rebekah’s husband. Because she’ll be like,‘Why aren’t you like that?’”

AT THE FALLS: “We had a town hall at Minnehaha Park, although I did not take a kayak over the falls.”

FAN MAIL: “Sometimes the letters say thank you for something I’ve done. Sometimes the letters say you are an idiot and the worst president ever.”

OPPORTUNITY: “We’re fighting so everybody has a chance. We’re fighting to vindicate the idea that no matter who you are or what you look like, how you grew up, or who you love, or who you parents were, or what your last name is – it doesn’t matter. America is a place where if you’re doing the right thing and you’re being responsible and you’re taking care of your family, that you can make it.”

BOEHNER LAWSUIT: “I might have said during one of those debates that I want to raise the minimum wage, so sue me if I do. But I didn’t think they were going to take it literally.”

REPUBLICAN OPPOSITION:
“They don’t do anything except block me and call me names. It can’t be that much fun. It would be much more fun if they said let’s do something together.”

HOPE:
"Cynicism is a choice, and hope is a better choice. Every day, I am lucky enough to receive a thousand acts of hope
