DELANO, Minn. (KMSP) -

On Sunday afternoon, the Crow River was rising rapidly as it barreled through downtown Delano, Minn. with a ferocity not often seen in late June, and residents were out in force, trying to stay ahead of the flood.

With water threatening to overtake Bridge Avenue, the owner of the popular Three Crows Coffee Shop on River Street is packing up as quickly as she can. Gina Coburn told Fox 9 News she's been forced to clear everything out a couple of times in the past, but this is different.

"They're going to cut our power and gas at 6 p.m.," she said. "We decided to evacuate."

With the Crow River expected to crest at 21 feet on Monday, Coburn and a community of volunteers frantically raced against the clock and the Crow River. Meanwhile, homeowners in other pockets of Delano and Wright counties had their fingers crossed and pumps churning.

"This thing goes up and down with every storm," Joe Sarych said. "With a couple or 3 inches of rain, it will fill up -- and then, a week later, you can walk across it."

Several years ago, Sarych and his wife took the flood fight into their own hands and erected a dirt berm to keep the water out of their yard. Stakes mark how quickly the Crow River swelled over the weekend -- with visible changes measured by hours.
