Sen. Amy Klobuchar tours Mankato flooding

Posted: Updated:

Several Minnesota communities are struggling to keep back the rising waters of swollen rivers, one of which is Mankato, where flood waters have forced nearly 100 people out of their homes.

"We are going to put our stuff in storage for now," Jeremiah Cowell told Fox 9 News.

Jeremiah and Lisa Cowell are just one of the 39 families moving out of the Homestead Apartments in Mankato after the flood waters rose to a depth of 3 feet in the parking lot.

"I was just shocked and surprised," Jeremiah Cowell admitted. "I never thought it flood up here into our apartments."

Sen. Amy Klobuchar was in town to tour the flooded areas on Sunday, and she was stunned when she saw what the floodwaters did the apartments. All the carpet and belongings have been moved out, and all 40 apartments must be repaired.

"It's very important that we get all the damages collected so that we can show the president that wee meet the $7.3 million necessary to trigger federal help for infrastructure," Klobuchar said.

A few miles away from those apartments, a neighborhood is also feeling the impact of the recent floods. In all, some 1,000 homes in Mankato have sustained some sort of damage -- and some of it was caused by overflowing storm drains.

"We've never seen it so significant in the city with the storm water," Mike said. "Usually, their systems are able to retain themselves. We just got much too fast."

Yet, similar damage can be found from International Falls, Minn., to Luverne, Minn. After all the damage is accounted for, Klobuchar said she is confident Minnesota will reach the threshold for federal assistance.

"Right now, what we are seeing is a state-wide disaster, really," Klobuchar said.
