Lawn-mowing neighbor busts burglary in Eden Prairie

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (KMSP) -

Police in Eden Prairie, Minn. say a woman who was mowing her lawn helped catch a burglar last month.

On the afternoon of May 15, the woman noticed a man walk out of her neighbor’s backyard carrying a suitcase. Earlier that afternoon, the woman had noticed a suspicious car in the neighborhood. Putting the pair of strange sightings together, the woman called 911.

Responding officers found one of the neighbor’s back doors had been pried open and several dresser drawers in the master bedroom had been disturbed. Several pieces of stolen jewelry were recovered from a local business, but some gemstones had already been removed.

Eden Prairie police reviewed video surveillance from the jewelry business and identified the suspect as a known burglar. An alert was issued to area law enforcement and the suspect was arrested by police in Bloomington two days later.

“Thanks to the observant neighbor who did the right thing by reporting the suspicious behavior, and to thorough detective work, this ring of home burglars has been arrested,” Eden Prairie police said in a blog post.

A search of the suspect’s car turned up jewelry, drugs and a handgun that had been stolen in a previous Eden Prairie burglary. Upon further investigation, detectives learned the suspect was part of a metro burglary ring, of which two other suspects have been arrested and charged.
