Neighbors share frustration over nagging water main break

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Water rates in the city are going up, and so is the frustration after another water main broke on Detroit's east side.

The gushing, bubbling mess is likely a symptom of Detroit's aging underground system.

Neighbors say they've been dealing with the broken main for the past three days. It's dangerous because it also means the loss of their east side Detroit neighborhood fire hydrant.

"It started Tuesday, Tuesday afternoon," says Thomas Potter.

He says he saw a city employee on scene briefly.

"A guy from Water and Sewerage came and I guess he was trying to do a shutoff or something, and whatever he did when he stuck the pole down there to shut the water off the water just kept going and the guy actually sat back and filled up his water container and just took off and left," Potter claims.

Those living in the area do still have water but say they are experiencing low water pressure.

"I've been trying to get on the phone with them for about three days and I could never get an answer, it just kept shooting me to the answering machine," he says.

It is dangerous, too. This is the hydrant for the block. If, heaven forbid, something starts burning the fire department will have to bring water here.

Detroit City Council recently voted to pass an 8 percent water rate hike. It'll begin July 1.

"Yeah, I'm on a fixed income and I'm just taking, doing what I can to pay mine, you know. I wish that this wouldn't happen like this," says John Amos.

Fox 2's Ron Savage placed a call with the city Thursday evening.
