Canterbury Park calls off races due to rain, storm threat

Posted: Updated:

On Thursday afternoon, officials at Canterbury Park announced that the evening race program scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. has been canceled due to recent rains and another approaching storm.

The Shakopee area endured heavy rainfall earlier in the day, leaving some flooding at the track.

“Due to the immense amount of rain we received today and to impending storms with lightning that are expected to be coming through the area for the next several hours, racing has been canceled for tonight,” Canterbury Park president Randy Sampson said.

Sampson said that with lightning concerns and another inch or two of rain possible, they decided not to run with the risk that the property or surrounding roads could flood.

We felt it was better to make the call now to minimize as much as possible the inconvenience to our guests, horsemen and employees,” Sampson said.
