VIDEO: Tornadoes rip through eastern South Dakota

WESSINGTON SPRINGS, S.D. (KMSP) - Several towns in eastern South Dakota are picking up the pieces after tornadoes ripped through the area on Wednesday.

VIDEO: The first 10 seconds of the video show a tornado in Alpena, then captures destruction in Wessington Springs.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS

The tornado went right through the heart of Wessington Springs, S.D. around 8 p.m., about two hours west of Sioux Falls, the National Weather Service said. Dozens of homes and businesses are destroyed and one person was hurt. Residents credit early tornado sirens that allowed them to seek shelter before the tornado hit. Many residents have been placed in an emergency shelter and the South Dakota National Guard has been called in to assist with the aftermath.

ALPENA

Another tornado was spotted about 20 miles northeast of Wessington Springs in Alpena, S.D.
