Gwinnett firefighters gain bullet proof vests

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - By: Nathalie Pozo, Newsradio 106.7

With a recent rash of school shootings, Gwinnett County Firefighters are taking a different approach to how they would respond to an active shooter.

The Gwinnett County Fire Department will soon receive close to 300 bulletproof vests. These bulletproof vests would allow medical crews to go into the building with police during an emergency involving an active shooter. In the past they've had to wait for a building to be clear before going in, sometimes not being able to get to these victims for 45 minutes to an hour. These bulletproof vests will allow paramedics and EMT's to get to these victims in a timely manner, potentially saving lives.

In addition to the bulletproof vests, the department will also carry light weight trauma kits equipped with tourniquets and other life saving tools.  They also have a mobile ambulance unit where they can treat 12-16 stable patients at once, relieving other medical personnel and ambulances for the more critically wounded.
