TIME TEST: Can Green Line meet 48-minute travel time?

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

The new Green Line took commuters to work, school and wherever else their hearts desired along the 11-mile route Monday -- but after an inaugural weekend free of crashes, Monday ended with a blemish.

Metro Transit authorities say a driver made an illegal left turn and hit a train car near Hampden and University avenues on Monday night. No injuries were reported and the train is running as normal once more.

It took 5,500 people to build the $1-billion light-rail line, and it created 200 permanent new jobs. There are 18 new stations along an 11-mile stretch from the Union Depot in St. Paul to Target Field in Minneapolis, and 15 bus routes have been altered in the process.

Metro Transit estimates it's a 48-minute trip from downtown to downtown, and Fox 9 News put that to the test and clocked 1 hour and 5 minutes, but those on board didn't seem to mind.

Tickets cost $2.25 for during rush hour, $1.75 during off hours and are good for 2.5 hours of riding both trains and buses. Commuters can purchase a disposable ticket with cash or credit card near each platform, or get a preloaded Go-To card at metrotransit.org for more frequent riding.

The trains will run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Sen. Amy Klobuchar called it a much needed boost in infrastructure and just another step in the direction of changing transportation in the country.
