POLICE CHASE: 2 injured in crashes with fleeing suspect on I-494

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (KMSP) -

A suspect in a criminal sexual conduct case is in custody after leading police on a chase that involved several crashes on Interstate 494 on Sunday afternoon, injuring two other motorists in his path.

According to Bloomington police, the chase began after a report came in at 12:06 p.m. that the suspect was leaving a residence on the 600 block of American Boulevard East in a vehicle.

The suspect, identified only as a 33-year-old Richfield man, was taken into custody after he was struck by a car on westbound I-494. Despite the series of collisions, police say the suspect had no visible injuries. He was booked on probable cause criminal sexual conduct and fleeing police in a motor vehicle.

FROM AMERICAN BOULEVARD TO 494

Officers quickly located the suspect in a vehicle at the intersection of American Boulevard and Portland Avenue, but although they attempted a traffic stop, police say he instead fled north on Portland.

Officers began a PIT maneuver -- essentially an intentional crash -- and temporarily disabled the suspect's vehicle. For a moment, the suspect exited the vehicle, but soon got back inside and fled west on 78th Street to northbound Nicollet Avenue. Then, he crossed to travel the wrong way up the eastbound exit ramp from Interstate 494 and headed straight into oncoming traffic.

Police say the vehicle crashed into two separate vehicles while traveling the wrong way on eastbound 494, injuring two people. Both suffered minor, non-life threatening injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals.

According to police, the man fled on foot and leapt over the median following the crashes on the interstate. As he ran through the westbound lanes of traffic, he was struck and officers then captured him. Police say he was offered medical treatment before he was taken into custody.

The crash remains under investigation, and the following agencies are involved:

- Bloomington Police Department
- Minnesota State Patrol
- Richfield Police Department
