Waseca, Minn. has its own hidden cash Twitter challenge

Posted: Updated:
WASECA, Minn. (KMSP) - A Waseca, Minn. couple is hiding cash around the city and using social media to encourage city dwellers to explore the area and learn more about local history.

The Twitter account @WasecaCash sends out clues and also posts them to the Waseca Hidden Cash Facebook page, simply asking the lucky person who discovers the cash to tweet a smiling photo in return.

The craze is national in scope -- perhaps the first Twitter account of its kind, dubbed @HiddenCash, has been planting money around San Francisco, Hermosa Beach, Calif., Chicago and New York. Dozens of followers are finding the $50 bills hidden by California real estate investor Jason Buzi, who went public as the man behind the account in a CNN interview.

The Waseca couple wishes to remain anonymous, but one donor explained why they started in an interview with Fox 9 News, saying, "I'm kind of a history buff myself. I said to my girlfriend, 'I bet you we know more about the history than a lot of the residents,' and what a way to kind of incorporate the treasure hunt."
