MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

A 15-month-old beat all the odds when he fell from a high-rise apartment window last month, and at a Thursday fundraiser to help cover his medical expenses, he seemed to be back to normal.

"It's still a blessing," Fadumo Abdillahi told Fox 9 News. "The family feels like they are blessed."

The community room at the Brian Coyle Center certainly lived up to its name on Thursday as Somalis from across the Twin Cities celebrated the boy's recovery.

"We thank God because falling from high level, for Musa to survive -- its' a miracle," Musa Dayib's mother said via an interpreter. "Something we never expected."

The family says the now-16-month-old boy had his last cast removed on Thursday morning, and he is back to his rambunctious old self.

Just one month ago, the boy fell 11 stories from a balcony in Riverside Plaza. He was rushed to the hospital and put in a medically-induced coma with a broken back, arms and ribs.

"It was Mother's Day, so this is a renewed gift to mom as she ahs been talking about," Abdillahi said. "It was a day of celebrating. Turned out to be a tragic day -- happy to be holding her son now. He's making remarkable progress."

Doctors credit Musa Dayib's quick recovery to landing on a patch of mulch -- and the fact that he is a toddler. Since he is so young, his bones are mostly made of cartilage, which means they are more flexible.

Besides a scar on the back of his head, the boy's mother says there are no visible signs he ever fell at all.

"Emotionally, it was tough for us," she explained. "It was a shock to something that we could not contain ourselves. Today, we see Musa doing well. That makes us happy and joyful to have Musa with us again."

Even Mayor Betsy Hodges couldn’t resist stopping by to have her picture taken with the so-called "miracle baby" as the community welcomed him back with open arms.

The boy's family is now in the process of moving to a lower-level apartment, but money from the fundraiser dinner will go toward his medical expenses. Anyone else who would like to make a donation can do so at Wells Fargo and Associated Bank locations.
