PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Shock and disbelief after a deadly shooting inside a church rectory in downtown Phoenix.

One priest was shot and killed, and another beaten and taken to the hospital in critical condition.

"This was a very tragic, and let me say tragic and appalling, criminal violation," said Chief Daniel Garcia.

Phoenix Police Chief Daniel Garcia was looking for words to describe the shooting death of 28-year-old Father Kenneth Walker and the brutal assault of 56-year-old Father Joseph Terra.

Walker died at the hospital and Terra was left in critical, but stable, condition.

Investigators say that Terra called the police to report the attack and offered information on the scene and talked to detectives at the hospital late Wednesday night.

After interviewing Terra again, Phoenix police say they're looking for a white man between 40 to 49-years-old.

Since last night, officers canvassed the area near the Mother of Mercy mission looking for clues, trying to figure out who would attack two priests at their place of worship and where they resided.

"We do have some strong physical evidence that we will be able to follow up on, the Phoenix Police Department will exhaust our resources into bringing to justice the individuals who have committed this crime," said Garcia.

That evidence comes from both the church and Walker's 2003 Mazda SUV. The suspect took off in it and abandoned it a few blocks away. When police responded to the scene, they believed it was a burglary, but now they say it's too early to label the crime.

Father Fred Adamson describes how Father Terra would react in that situation: "Father Terra is a pretty strong man, he's not afraid of anybody, and if someone came and asked him for something he would give them the shirt off his back, that's the type of priest he is, a real servant of God."

Father Adamson also said that in his own suffering Father Terra was able to absolve Father Walker and offer him his last rights. He said knowing that, brought comfort to the Catholic community.

Police have recovered physical evidence, but they need eye witness accounts. Even the smallest bit of information could lead them to an arrest, if you have any information call 480-WITNESS.

An $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
