Police investigating robbery of teen leaving prom

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - A Detroit teenager was robbed while leaving his high school prom at the Atheneum Hotel in Greektown.

"He said him and his prom date walked out of the hotel; they went to the valet [and] in the process of giving the valet his ticket to retrieve his car someone walked up behind him, kind of shoved him on the back a little bit and in the process of him turning around to see who shoved him they ripped the glasses off his face and took off running," says the victim's mother, who wished to remain unnamed.

The young man's $1,500 Cartier glasses were stolen.

No weapons were shown and the guy who stole the glasses was seen running off.

"The individuals that were responsible were actually thrown out of the hotel earlier that evening but [were] allowed to loiter outside on the property," says the mother.

FOX 2's Ron Savage spoke with management at the hotel and says they declined to go on camera, but Savage says they did tell him security did the right thing. They said their security followed protocol and that the hotel regrets the robbery happened off hotel property.

"I'm absolutely sure that it happened on their property," the mother says.

Detroit police are investigating.

The mother says anyone going to prom is at risk because of the way the kids are dressed and the fact that they are out late at night.

"Young men are targeting people at prom that are coming outside in expensive jewelry and expensive glasses and they're robbing them. They're preying on our teenage children and everyone is sweeping it under the rug," says the mother.

If you have any information that could aid in the investigation you're asked to call Detroit police.
