Soldier says 'yes' to surprise proposal at St. Paul Saints game

Posted: Updated:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

One of the fun things about going to a St. Paul Saints game is you never know what you'll see at the ballpark -- but a soldier who will soon head overseas on her third deployment got the biggest surprise of all.

Laura Shipman has been deployed twice already, and in the fall, she'll head back to the Middle East -- but when she returns home this time, she'll be returning with a new title: Bride to be.

Her longtime boyfriend, Anthony Atchison, admitted to Fox 9 News that he was nervous before Monday's on-field reveal even though her father had already given his blessing for the two to wed.

Shipman was honored as the Saints' Hero of the Game, and she stood at salute to honor the flag while the national anthem was sung -- but what happened in the middle of the 5th inning put a smile on her face.

The bride's father told Fox 9 News his daughter had an idea that the proposal was coming at some point in the future because the two are very much in love, but her father suspected she "wouldn't have any clue" it would come on Monday in front of a crowd.

"I thought he was being sneaky or something," Shipman admitted. "He surprised me with the whole hero thing."

Surprised though she was, her answer was a clear yes.

"I'm glad it's over," Atchison admitted with a smile. "I was really nervous for the last couple of hours, just trying to hide it from her."

As a member of the Air National Guard, she has been to Afghanistan and Kuwait.

There's a big misconception about food vendors at the Minnesota State Fair. Many people think you can set up a booth, work 12 days and make a pile of cash. But it's not that easy. Aside from a lot of hard work, it also takes some luck.
