PHOTOS: Minnesota River highlighted in fog

Posted: Updated:

A pretty cool sight as the sun came up Sunday morning with low lying fog hovering over some of the river valleys through 9am. Many of us saw the fog as we stepped out the door or looked out the window, and nothing appeared to be all that special. But if you step back and view the fog from a distance away, it makes for pretty spectacular images. This is what happened Sunday with pockets of low lying dense fog across the metro and areas of central Minnesota. Here is what it looked like from our tower cam in Eden Prairie just before and after sunrise.

You can really start to see that this fog is just cloud cover hovering right along the ground. Not exactly fun to drive in when visibility drops from several miles to just a few feet in a split second, but cool to experience nonetheless. Well, it was a similar but much cooler story along the Minnesota River. If you drove through the river valley, you probably wouldn’t think much about it, but the visible satellite image around 8am was astounding…

REALLY easy to see where the fog has developed… right along and through the river valley, and ONLY the river valley. This occurs when there is excess moisture around, and you have calm winds and clearing skies which allows the cooler more dense air to sink to the surface. This air finds the low spots around, (the river valleys) which allows it to cool even more. But before it can cool, there is so much moisture around that the only way the air CAN cool is by forcing water out of the air parcels, and that’s how you get fog to form.
