WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

A black bear was shot and killed in West St. Paul by officers early Saturday morning according to a release from the West St. Paul Police Department. According to authorities, the bear possibly had an injured back leg and might be the same bear that had been recently reported in Savage, Eagan and other south metro communities.

The officers were unsuccessful in cornering the bear with hopes of using a tranquilizer gun to subdue it. Officers contacted the Department of Natural Resources who stated they do not respond to such incidents and that local agencies should respond accordingly to protect their communities.

According to the release, the department acted out of concern of public risk due to the animal’s startled state.
