Student swindled while seeking summer babysitting job

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - Twenty-one-year-old Nicole Dib is a senior at Grand Valley State University and she's back home in metro Detroit for the summer and hoping to make some money.

She's registered with Care.Com for babysitting jobs and thought she had found a good one.

"Sandra Milley texted me and said she had gotten my information off of Care.com and she was looking for a babysitter for her 6-year-old son who was in a wheelchair," Dib says. "She said she wanted to hire me and they were moving back to Michigan from Arizona."

The person emailing Dib back in May said she was a single mom buying a powered wheelchair for her son and asked to have it shipped to Dib.

Sandramilley2000@gmail.com said she was sending a check for $2,775 to Dib - $2,400 for her to pay for the wheelchair and a $375 deposit for Dib's babysitting services.

"She told me to deposit it and let her know what the bank said and let her know when the check was cleared," Dib says.

Dib brought the check for $2,775 to her Chase bank. They said it would take 24 hours for those funds to be available and, sure enough, the next day that fraudulent check had cleared.

That's when the scammer said the wheelchair deal fell through and that she had found another one and needed the money back, and for Dib to go buy MoneyPak cards in the amount of $2,400 and email the codes - which Dib did.

"Next day, I got a Chase alert on my phone and it said that the check was returned, and so then my account was in the negative," Dib says.

Now, she has to pay the bank back all of that money - money that would have gone toward her room and board and books next semester.

Dib says she just can't believe Chase gave the all clear on that check within 24 hours instead of holding it longer and finding out it was counterfeit.

"It's just very frustrating that they had cleared a check that was bad. That's their responsibility to protect their customers and they couldn't even do that," says Dib.

FOX 2 is working on contacting Chase to get some help for Dib.

Meantime, she just wants to warn others.

"It's just awful that someone could take advantage of you like that," she says.

Dib has filed a police report but it's not known who scammed her or where the person might be.

Not surprisingly, sandramilley2000@gmail.com did not return our emails, but the California company listed on the check, Tiger Tanks, is a legitimate business.

The company has received calls from all over the country from people who received the counterfeit checks for fake babysitting and modeling jobs and Tiger Tanks has made police reports as well.
