Memorial for Missing Climber

Posted: Updated:
Friends and family of a Minnesota man missing and presumed dead in a mountain climbing accident will gather to celebrate his life Friday.

Mark Mahaney, 26, of St. Paul was part of a group of mountain climbers scaling Mt. Rainer in Washington State late last month, when an apparent avalanche killed all six climbers. Authorities estimate the avalanche resulted in the climbers falling some 3,300 feet from their last known position of 12,800 feet on Rainer’s Liberty Ridge. There is virtually no chance any survived such a fall, though no bodies have yet been recovered. No ground searches are planned due to the conditions, though as the snow melts this summer a helicopter-based recovery will be evaluated.

Mahaney had been part of a group that had scaled the mountain in 2013, but according to his family was determined to return and conquer the most difficult route to the top of Rainer, the Liberty Ridge route. In a statement, his family says that while his life may have tragically ended so early, they take joy in knowing he was participating in his “true passion” in life, climbing.

Friday’s service will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Prior Lake.
