Five-Year-Old Shot In Jersey City

Posted: Updated:
Jersey City, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Earlier this week five-year-old Jaden Thaxton was gunned down near his apartment in Jersey City in broad daylight.

This tragic incident occurred just hours after Mayor Steve Fulop announced a summer-long anti-violence initiative and the arrests of 103 people.

Mark Klein was an eyewitness to the shooting. He says a car coming down Martin Luther King Boulevard rained bullets on the courtyard where Thaxton was playing. He got hit in the stomach and stumbled 20 or so feet before collapsing, sending onlookers into a state of panic.

“I came out here and it was just complete chaos. There were people standing around crying, yelling. There were 20 or 30 cops at least around, it was complete chaos,” he recalled.

Members of the community, like Warren Moore, say they’re horrified by this situation.

“Ya know his mom walked up, I held her and told her to be strong for her son. My heart goes out to him because I can relate also to him because I have got shot before when I was younger,” he said.

Although Police Chief Robert Cowan says crime data places Jersey City cops in the places they’re needed most, some residents like Lourdes Rivera feel that more needs to be done in this part of town to make sure another tragedy like this doesn’t happen again.

“There’s cops down here and cameras, whatever, whatever, but they need more security up and down this area, it’s not a good area,” she said.

Jersey City Medical Center spokesman Mark Rabson confirmed that Thaxton is in stable condition. His mom, Tiffany Thaxton, has been with him at the hospital and he’ll be discharged within 24 hours.

Sadly, Jeter the pit bull puppy is missing. While dogs go missing all the time, there are two specific things that distinguish this story from others. First, several witnesses say Jeter didn't wonder off and that they saw Jeter get taken. Second, the community has rallied in a huge way to help find the loveable pup.

Empty spaces are popping up all over Atlantic City with the closing of three major casinos: Revel, Trump Plaza, and Showboat. Even with all of this going on, the city is still trying to use eminent domain to take away the home of an Atlantic City local legend, Piano Man Charlie Birnbaum. Birnbaum has tuned pianos for icons like: Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, and John Legend. He's been a resident of Atlantic City in the same home for over 50 years.
