UAW's new president gives inaugural address

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - Dennis Williams won the vote by a landslide, and the newly-elected UAW President gave his first speech to a roaring crowd.

"America rise up! Join a union! Get in the fight!" Williams said Thursday. "Our country has been handcuffed by extremists that are more interested in self and political gain than the needs of American people."

Williams, now the 11th president of the UAW, the man who considers himself a friend to the president, has close ties to the White House and he's vowing to fight.

"No more concessions - we are tired of it. Enough's enough!" he said.

The UAW is struggling to regain its footing. The union's influence has weakened and right to work legislation dealt a financial blow.

Williams was formerly the UAW's treasury secretary. He plans to take on The Big Three seeking higher wages and corporate responsibility.

"I want to work closely with the companies as long as it doesn't hurt our members. I want them to succeed like all of you want them to succeed. But, I also want to tell them, 'I do not like confrontation, but I am not afraid of confrontation,'" he said.

And neither is his army.
