2 injured in elevator shaft fall

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

One person is in critical condition and another is seriously injured after falling into an elevator shaft in Queens, said police.

The men were working on an elevator in Sunnyside, Queens when one of the workers' harness reportedly malfunctioned sending the worker several stories down the shaft.

One worker was injured by debris from the fall. He is listed in stable condition, according to police.

The men were working at the construction site of the Sunnyside Elementary School on 45-45 42nd Street.

A construction worker named Robert Vitiello said the line of the harness broke, causing the man to plummet to the ground. He also said the other worker was hung up on his own harness. When firefighters responded to the scene, Vitiello said the man who hit the ground had a pulse before he was taken away.

Both men were taken to Elmhurst Hospital.
