Flip Saunders named Timberwolves head coach

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Flip Saunders will be back as head coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Appointed Timberwolves president of basketball operations in May 2013, Saunders served as president and general manager of the franchise from May 11, 1995 until December 18, 1995.

He'll continue to work in the front office while also acting as head coach.

Saunders replaced Bill Blair as head coach in 1995 and was at the helm when the Timberwolves reached the playoffs for the first time ever during the 1996-1997 season, and he's taken the Wolves to the club's only eight playoff appearances, including the Western Conference Finals in 2004. He compiled a 411-326 record during his ten seasons. Saunders coached the team until 2005 when he was replaced by then-vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale.

THE SEARCH

Former Wolves head coach Rick Adelman retired in April after three seasons with the team and 23 seasons with the NBA. Adelman’s 40 wins this season were the most since the 2004-2005 season.

The Wolves front office spoke with Grizzlies head coach and Minnesota native Dave Joerger but Grizzlies owner Robert Pera announced Joerger would be staying in Memphis a few weeks ago.

Sam Mitchell's name also popped up during the vacancy -- Mitchell played for the Wolves during their inaugural season in 1989 and stayed with the team until 1992. He served as an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks in 2002-04, head coach for the Toronto Raptors from 2004-08 and assistant coach for the then-New Jersey Nets from 2010-11.

WHERE IS THE LOVE?

Where will the team’s All-Star go? Kevin Love has reportedly reached out to the Wolves, saying he will opt out of his current contract and that he intends to become an unrestricted free agent after next season.
