Attorney: Pregnant woman hit by police Taser was fleeing group

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

The video got a lot of attention and spurred countless questions. Now, the attorney representing a pregnant woman who was struck by a police officer's Taser is explaining what occurred.

"Obviously, Latrice is still trying to recover from the incident," attorney Benjamin Tarshish said. "A lot of shock -- physically, emotionally, mentally."

Sitting with her mother and several family members, Latrice Trotter let her attorney speak for her because she is still struggling with what happened to her last Thursday night.

"I can't imagine a scenario where a pregnant woman who is unarmed would be tasered by police," Tarshish told Fox 9 News. "You'd need a heightened threshold to get to that level."

Earlier this week, two witnesses contacted Fox 9 News to share cell phone video of the aftermath. The footage shows Trotter lying on the ground while a Minneapolis police officer stands over her.

Trotter, who is 5 months pregnant, was downtown picking up dinner for herself and her fiancé when she got into an argument with a group of girls on the light rail platform. Her attorney says the group wanted to steal her phone and jacket because of a beef from years before.

"Rhonda got a call from her daughter in a panic," Tarshish explained. "She was afraid her daughter was going to be attacked. She called 911 for protection -- to protect her daughter."

Rhonda Trotter can be seen in the video the witnesses sent to Fox 9 News, yelling at the officer who used the Taser on her daughter.

"She's the one who aggressed the fight," that officer can be heard saying in reply.

Witnesses told Fox 9 News that one of the girls had slapped Latrice Trotter, and that she had tried to step around the officer as he broke up the fight.

ATTORNEY: MOTHER TOLD 911 DAUGHTER WAS PREGNANT

Many have wondered whether officers were aware that Latrice Trotter was pregnant, but her attorney says the 911 call her mother placed proves that they were.

"As for calling for help then becoming the victim of those you seek the help of -- that's got to be a bad feeling for her," Tarshish said.

According to Tarshish, the 19-year-old still has marks on her arm and stomach from where the Taser hit her -- but she's more worried about how the ordeal will affect her unborn child.

"She's seen the video," Tarshish confirmed. "It gives her nightmares. It's traumatic. Shakes her core."

According to the Minneapolis Police Department's policy, officers must be able to articulate a heightened justification for using a stun gun on certain individuals, including women who are pregnant.

Trotter was arrested for disorderly conduct and for a previous warrant for rioting out of Brooklyn Center.
