PHOENIX (KSAZ) - He got out of an Arizona prison after serving close to 40 years for the murders of a young couple on a lover's lane in Scottsdale.

Killings he insists he did not commit. Now the man is back behind bars accused of sexually assaulting two children.

Free for just over a year before being arrested again. According to court records, Maccumber is accused of 4 counts of sexual assault of a child.

That child is a family member of his who lives in Colorado.

"I made that statement of innocence, I don't know, ten thousand times since, and I'll take that statement to the grave," said Bill Macumber.

That's what Bill Macumber said back in 2012 when he walked out of prison a free man. The Arizona Justice Project instrumental in freezing Macumber. They claimed he was innocent, spending 37 years behind bars after being wrongfully convicted of killing two people.

"Justice however late is still justice," he said.

But now new child sex allegations are tearing Macumber's family apart. His son seen here in blue and white walking by his side kicked Macumber out of the house last September after the allegations surfaced.

According to court records, his son worked with the Justice Project for years to free him.

"This is the criminal justice system's worst nightmare, where someone is released early, and now we potentially have new victims," said Bill Montgomery.

Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery is fired up after hearing Macumber is behind bars again. Montgomery was against Macumber's plea deal & release. Here's what he said a year and a half ago.

"If we had the evidence, if we had the shells and the casings and the gun, we would have gone forward, and we would have secured convictions with a jury verdict of guilty again," said Montgomery.

Montgomery now wonders where Macumber's team of attorneys and supporters are now.

"He has a $200,000 bond, so where are all of Bill Macumber's defenders and supporters now, who couldn't post a bond to get him out?" asked Bill Montgomery.

The Justice Project issued a statement saying the facts of the 1962 case haven't changed, and neither has their confidence in him. They say Macumber has entered a plea of not guilty and insists he is innocent. The group says they are not representing him in his current case.
