Teddy bear helps locate used clothing burglars

ATHENS, Ga. -

A pink teddy bear served as a lucky charm for Athens-Clarke County Police as the stuffed animal led them to an alleged burglar.

A GPS tracking device was placed in the teddy bear by charity organizers after clothes were reported stolen from donation drop-off bins at Georgia Square Mall in Athens.

The bear was placed in a bag of clothing in one of the collection bins. Tuesday morning there was an alert that the device was moving.

The hidden tracking device led police to a thief at another donation bin. According to the police report, Melvin Wilder was arrested as he was stuffing clothing back into a bin perhaps in an effort to dispose of evidence.

Police say Wilder confessed to the crime.

The investigation also led police to a huge black market for used clothing.
