Land vs. Peters is not a race of chromosome Y vs. X

Posted: Updated:
Conservatives are pretty stingy with their money so some folks are wondering in this town why they continue to spend money attacking Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Gary Peters because he backed Obamacare yet polls have him leading by a respectable 44%-38% margin over GOP contender Terri Lynn Land.

"Those folks who feel strongly about the issue, their minds are made-up," reports Bernie Porn from EPIC-MRA.  So the ads are a waste of money?

"At this point, yeah," the pollster contends.

The lobbyist for the Michigan chapter of the Americans for Prosperity which has bankrolled these million dollar ad campaigns, disagrees.

"The ads are working," counters Scott Hagerstrom who is not allowed by law to endorse this candidate or that.  However his "issue" ads are aimed at those anti-Obama voters and in Mr. Porn's latest statewide survey 65% of those who oppose the Affordable Care Act support Ms. Land, but interesting 17% opposed to the act support Democrat Peters.  Conversely for those who back the president's program Mr. Peters is rewarded with 76% of the vote while Ms. Land garners 8%.

On another advertising front, Ms. Land got high marks for her "I'm a woman" TV commercial as pundits liked it.  She told voters she knows more about those issues than her opponent who is a man.

However the effectiveness of that ad is also in question.

Mr. Peters has 47% of the female vote compared to her 33% while she commands a 44%-39% lead with men.  So the female candidate appeals more to men than she does to women and this is not a unique situation. In a local house race involving conservative female Wendy Day out of Livingston County, she has shirts that read "Women for Wendy" when her polling suggests it should read "Men for Wendy."  They support or more than female citizens.

In the Land-Peters contest in the all important independent women sub group, he has 38% of those to her 27% while she again holds a comfortable lead, 39%-28% with independent men.

The take away from all this, it's not your gender that counts, but what you stand for.
