PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Phoenix Fire Department crews recovered a body from the south side of Camelback Mountain that authorities believe is that of a missing Washington State man.

The body was located 200 feet off the trail and down an embankment from the top of the mountain. It's unclear whether the man fell or climbed down to avoid the heat.

A team of volunteer hikers located the body Tuesday afternoon. They called police and fire crews and then led the responding crews to the body.

Police have begun investigating and believe that it is the body of Eric Fernandes. The body will be examined by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's office who will officially confirm the identity.

Authorities had called off the search for Fernandes earlier Tuesday because of the high temperatures.
