According to the Wall Street Journal, Google plans to spend about $1 billion on a "fleet of satellites to extend Internet access to unwired regions of the globe."

In the article, WSJ says Google will "start with 180 small, high-capacity satellites orbiting the earth at lower altitudes than traditional satellites, and then could expand."

This project is being headed up by Greg Wyler, the found of O3b Networks Ltd., a satellite-communications startup.

The project could cost anywhere from between $1 billion to more than $3 billion.
