Jerry Reuss: One Thing To Get To The Majors, Another To Stay There

Posted: Updated:

"You know I never get tired of seeing that clip."

That's former Dodger Jerry Reuss telling Steve how much he still loves seeing footage of his shutout against the Giants in San Francisco back in 1980. He was in Tuesday to talk about his new book "Bring in the Right Hander!". The book focuses on Jerry's 22 years in the Major Leagues and has some pretty interesting stories...like the one he told Steve about his brush with greatness at an early age.

"At 17 years old I went down to Busch Stadium...and it was tryouts for the Atlanta Braves and they gave me a locker...it turned out they put me in a locker between Hall of Famers Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews..."

Little did Reuss know, he and Hank would cross paths again.

"He was very kind, he said 'were you the young man that was throwing hard out there?' I said 'yes sir I was', and he says 'well I wish you all the best. Little did I know at that time just a few short years later we would face up and he hit home run number 713 off me. I'm not particularly proud of that but it's Hank Aaron!"

Jerry has a book signing June 4th at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library starting at 12:30. He'll be at Vromer's Bookstore in Pasadena June 13th. And on June 14th, jerry will be in Agoura Hills at "World Class Motoring". "Bring in the Right Hander!" is out now.

Fun facts about Jerry Reuss: (Source: Wikipedia)

1) He is a former left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball, best known for his years with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who had a 22-year career from 1969 to 1990. Reuss played for eight teams in his major league career; along with the Dodgers (1979–87), he played for the St. Louis Cardinals (1969–71), Houston Astros (1972–73), and Pittsburgh Pirates (1974–78). At the end of his career (1987–90), he played for the Cincinnati Reds, California Angels, Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, and the Pirates again (Reuss is one of only two Pirates to have played for Danny Murtaugh, Chuck Tanner, and Jim Leyland, the other being John Candelaria).

2) In 1988 he became the second pitcher in history, joining Milt Pappas, to win 200 career games without ever winning 20 in a single season. He was one of only 29 players in major league history to play in four different decades.

3) Reuss was a two time All-Star - first in 1975 with the Pirates, having 18 wins and 11 losses that season and an earned run average of 2.54, and then again in 1980 with the Dodgers, striking out all three batters he faced in that year's game, and earning the win.

Jerry has a book signing tomorrow at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library starting at 12:30pm.

He'll be at Vromer's Bookstore in Pasadena, June 13th at 7:00pm.

And on June 14th, Jerry will be in Agoura Hills at "World Class Motoring" at 11:00am.

Clippers owner Donald Sterling repeatedly consented to his wife selling the Clippers while facing the prospect of being stripped of the team by the NBA, then suddenly changed his mind and disregarded the terms of the family trust, Shelly Sterling's attorney told a judge today.
Shelly Sterling acted properly in removing her husband as a director of the family trust that owns the Los Angeles Clippers, and she has the authority to sell the team despite Donald Sterling's objections, a judge tentatively ruled on Monday.
