Search to continue for man missing at Stony Creek

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - Dive teams temporarily suspended the search for a 21-year-old man Monday evening. The man went missing after jumping into a lake at Stony Creek Metropark. The search will continue Tuesday.

Meanwhile, his family is devastated and tells FOX 2's Maurielle Lue they don't understand why their son, who could barely swim, would jump into a lake without a life vest.

"I see my child gasping for air. He's still my baby and I see my child gasping for air," says Tyrone Fairley. He and his wife can only guess what their son's last few moments alive were like, but they know they were tragic.

Twenty-one-year-old Malcolm Fairley and three friends took two paddle boats into the lake at Stony Creek Metropark in Washington Township Sunday evening.

Malcolm is said to have not been wearing a life vest.

"I know my child was not an idiot. I don't understand why he out of all of the parties on the boat didn't have a life jacket; I don't understand why he out of all of the parties on the boat decided to go into the water," says Tyrone. "He went down, came back up momentarily and went down again and didn't come up."

Police say one of the friends jumped in to save Malcolm but couldn't find him in the murky water. Monday evening threatening weather forced dive teams to end a second day of searching a little earlier than expected.

"I'm sad but I'm proud, and I know he's going to heaven. So, I'm proud," says Tyrone.

Malcolm was a proud new father to son Lucas, just 16 months old. He worked several jobs to take care of his family but was exited about becoming an Army Reservist; he was awaiting orders for a permanent duty station.

"He wrote me a letter from Basic Training and it had a footnote that said, 'From your son, who you made a man, who is now a soldier,'" Tyrone remembers.

Malcolm loved video games and sports, but most of all he loved people.

"'I love you Granny,' with my mother. 'Hey Dad, what you doing? I love you Dad,' He was always that 'I love you' kid to the point of not being sickening but to the point of being Malcolm," says Tyrone.

Now they wish they could hear that just one more time,

"I love you. We [are going] to take care of Lucas," says Tyrone. "We're going to take care of everybody because that's what we do. Don't worry, Malcolm, you left things in good hands."

Malcolm's parents told Lue they have not heard from the other people Malcolm was on the paddle boats with. They say they don't know who the other people are and are in the dark about what happened.

They are asking the parents of those people to get in touch with them. They say they just want to know what happened and don't want to wait until the police report is complete.
