Witnesses: Minneapolis police used Taser on pregnant woman

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Two women tell Fox 9 News they watched a Minneapolis police officer us a Taser on a pregnant woman before she fell to her stomach near the light rail platform on Nicollet Mall, and they have video of the confrontation.

VIDEO: Witnesses confront police over Taser use

Although neither witness that contacted Fox 9 News caught the actual deployment of the Taser on camera, they say it's important for people to watch the video they took on their cell phones.

"Right when she came to, she was like, 'I'm pregnant! I'm pregnant!'" Duta Sully recalled.

Sully took out her cell phone and recorded as other witnesses confronted the Minneapolis Police about the alleged police brutality.

"Oh snap -- this is not okay, and I pulled out my phone," she said.

Krystal Gonzalez got her phone out too, and both say they watched the Minneapolis police officer seen in the footage stun 19-year-old Latrice Trotter with a Taser.

"She just like, straightened out -- like planked -- and fell straight on her belly," Sully recalled.

The two friends told Fox 9 News they were waiting for a ride near the light rail station on Thursday evening when they saw Trotter arguing with another woman.

"We see them about to fight, and then we see a police car pull up," Gonzalez remembered.

Sully said the situation quickly escalated, with one woman slapping Trotter. When a Minneapolis police officer tried to get between the women, Trotter apparently tried to get around him -- and that's when she was allegedly hit with a Taser.

"Why didn't you pepper spray the pregnant lady or put her in a hold or something?" Sully asked.

In response to a Fox 9 News inquiry, Minneapolis police issued a statement saying, "We are investigating and take every allegation of misconduct seriously. Any deployment of a Taser initiates a force of use evaluation, and we are unable to comment at this time."

Police did release an incident report that named the two officers as Adam Lewis and Michael Williams; however, a police spokesman declined to identify the officer seen in the video obtained by Fox 9 News -- again saying that it is under investigation.

Fox 9 News contacted Metro Transit to ask for their surveillance video of the area; however, they would not release it because police got a hold of it first and it is now part of the larger investigation.

Trotter was arrested for disorderly conduct and was booked on a prior warrant; however, police say she was released.

Fox 9 News attempted to find Trotter based on the address listed on the police report; however, it turned out to be People Serving People, a homeless shelter in downtown Minneapolis.

As for Sully and Gonzalez, they admit they don't trust the police and are now focusing their concern on Trotter and her baby.

"If something did happen to that baby, we have proof to show something did happen," Sully said.
