Paralyzed man wants his street fixed, says flooded potholes leave him stranded

WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) - The brewing storms have a Warren man worried. He needs a motorized wheelchair to get around and says his street is so filled with potholes that flood every time it rains, leaving his stranded.

Bobby Harmon showed FOX 2's Robin Schwartz how he navigates the potholes on his street. He also showed photos of how the pits and craters collect standing water when it rains, leaving a small lake at the edge of his driveway making it tough for him to cross the street or get around.

"I cannot go out of my driveway when there's water there because I do now know where the potholes are at. ... And I've called the city a couple of times and they have not done [anything] to repair this road," Harmon says.

He's been paralyzed since a boating accident 15 years ago. He's also had cancer. He says he's lived here for the last eight years and he just wants something done.

"I would like the road fixed so I could cross out of my driveway safely and without having to worry about flipping over or getting stuck," Harmon says.

In her report, Schwartz shows a pipe that's supposed to be underground. Harmon says they keep throwing gravel on top of it but that's not solving the problem

We called the mayor's office and they were quick to respond.

Mayor Jim Fouts says he's talked to Harmon personally about frequent complaints and the city has taken action, shoveling his sidewalks and driveway this winter and addressing other concerns.

Fouts says the Department of Public Works will be out tomorrow to patch the potholes and a long-term fix is coming as part of the city's first road improvement program in 50 years.

UPDATE: The city did send out a patching crew, which patched some of the potholes on the street. However, the pothole at the end of Harmon's driveway was not patched and that is the one he and his family say gives him the most trouble. FOX 2 put in a call to Warren's Dept. of Public Works inquiring if the crew would be returning to finish the job.
