Volunteers lead aggressive campaign to solve crimes

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) - Volunteers shouted with a megaphone and saturated a Detroit neighborhood with Crime Stoppers flyers Saturday as part of an aggressive campaign to fight and solve crimes. They were looking for tips in a February 2014 hit and run that claimed the life of a 55 year old woman.

Volunteers with the Marcus Garvey movement knocked on doors, and handed out flyers to passing drivers in the area of Puritan and Asbury Park. That's where Darlene Yurgin was hit and killed while walking to church. She was hit by two vehicles. So far, there are no arrests.

"A car ran her over. She was injured, she didn't die. Another car came and that was the death blow. Both cars kept going," said activist Malik Shabazz. "Somebody -- someone out there knows something."

The vehicles involved are described as a black Chevy Monte Carlo and a white van. There's a $2500 reward for information that leads to an arrest. Call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK UP. You can remain anonymous.

Volunteers will be back out Sunday at 3pm on Six Mile and Wyoming trying to help solve two more cases. The murders of Brittany Brown and Phillip Wallace. Brown was raped, tortured and set on fire in March. Wallace, a 22 year old former honors student, was gunned down last September.
