PHOENIX (AP) - A Goodyear man who pleaded guilty to killing his grandmother last year by beating her with a shovel and slitting her throat has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 40-year-old Jason Eric Howell also was sentenced Tuesday to lifetime supervised probation.

He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in May and also pleaded guilty to child abuse and aggravated assault charges in another case.

Howell told authorities that he killed 78-year-old Helen Jean Lee over her strict curfew rules and how much she charged him for rent.

He had lived at his grandmother's home in a gated community for the past three years.

Goodyear police say Howell led investigators to a desert area some 75 miles southwest of Phoenix, where Lee's body was found Nov. 2.
